 Never Smile At A Crocodile

Leon was exhausted.

Seriously. Fucking. Exhausted.

They'd searched just about every room in the vast expanse of the RPD, running into zombies, fighting for their lives and backtracking God-only-knew how many times, to pick up keys and set paintings on fire and put jewels in the butt-crack of statues. Christ, where was Indiana Jones when you needed him?

And who the Hell designed the RPD anyhow? It was supposed to be a police precinct, not the fucking crystal maze.

God, imagine trying to get paperwork in this place.

"Sorry, Sir, I couldn't get the files on last week's arson case...I needed to find a diamond key and shove it up a dog's ass, but Jim from traffic control already beat me to it."

He strongly suspected this must be the least efficient workplace in the world, and he had a nagging feeling that probably had something to do with Brian Irons.

He cast his gaze to Ada as they silently walked through the corridors, glancing at the map he'd managed to pilfer from a desk somewhere. She looked equally tired, and somewhat despondant.

It's time to call this a day, sweetheart.

"Ada," he chose his next words carefully. "Look, I'm sorry, I really am, to have to be the one to say this...but I don't think John's here."

He pressed on, putting a gentle hand on his arm. "I've helped you search the entire building...if there was anyone alive here, we'd have found them by now."

God, but he'd grown fond of her. Perhaps it was the fear, the continually watching each others backs for the last few hours, the fact that they'd been thrown together and their survival had become somehow intertwined inexorably, but his initial urge to proteect a pretty girl had quickly grown into a grim determination that he would not let anything happen to this cold, but deeply vulerable young woman.

"We need to go to the sewers now, Ada, the entrance is close by. We've done everything we can, and now I'm gonna get you out of here, ok?"

Luckily for Ada, her voice was already stiff. “I'll be the one to decide when to stop looking.”

The powers that be had been fairly generous so far. The station had been mostly empty, aside from a few wandering carriers that gave them no trouble. Accessing the entirety of the station hadn't been quite as generous, in part to the many renovations the building had seen, and a few unorthodox security measures. Ada knew of all of them, and more than once let her knowledge pass off as cleverness. If she hadn't, they might have been still roaming the halls, wasting time and energy for certain keys or emblems.

Leon remained adamant in his duty to escort her through the lonely, abandoned halls. They had chatted some to pass the time, though what she told him he already knew or was just another lie. To him, she was just a desperate woman searching for her man in a crisis.

At least he's finally willing to leave the RPD, though he wants to do it for my sake.

She took a breath, losing some of the strain in her voice. “But you're right, we should head to the sewers. We might find some clues down there about any survivors.”

She turned down the hall, heading back to the parking garage, then the kennel that held the manhole to the sewer. They had checked it already, but it was closed, a crowbar on the shelf next to it. If any survivors had attempted to escape through the sewers, someone had to have shut the manhole after them. Seeing that it was still shut either meant that someone never followed them, or never got a chance to...

“You know Leon, forgive me for repeating myself, but I'll be fine by myself,” Ada said as they walked down the concrete hallway. “The city isn't going to pin a medal on your chest for your heroics, so there's no point in hanging around with me...” She cocked a glance over her shoulder to him, more than a little mischievous looking. “...or do you just like Asian women?”

Leon simply rolled his eyes. He was getting used to Ada's constant insistences that she'd be fine alone, and he felt as though he was getting used to dodging them, too.

"In case you hadn't noticed, Ada," he reached over and deliberately brushed a strand of hair out of her face, "I'd quite like to get out of here too. You expect me to stay at the RPD and go down with the ship?"

He shrugged and checked his gun for the umpteenth time that day.

Oh man, I really do dig Asian chicks...

Ada jerked her head away from his hand, but smiled playfully back. “Whatever you say, handsome,” she purred, then strode on.

She hadn't intended on the playful flirts, they just sort of developed out of a necessity. Leon wanted a woman to protect, so she gave him one without sacrificing her own dignity. He wasn't a bad person; all in all, pretty likable. Ada wouldn't even have minded bumping into him under other circumstances, maybe when they both had a little more free time.

What she didn't anticipate was the sudden emptiness. At first the smiles and charms she flashed were like any other. Each sly look she gave him after they dispatched a creature kept him tethered. Maybe it was some absent thinking as they roamed the halls, but whatever it was, it gave her a split second to reflect on what she was doing. Had she ever smiled at someone like that genuinely, or meant one of the compliments she made about his intentions? Had anyone ever wanted to protect her?

Not the time to think about it. You're just tired and frustrated that you haven't been able to get on with my assignment. Don't read too much into him. You've already caught him staring at your chest and ass and you pretended you didn't notice. The whole cop motif is just a big convenient excuse.

The feeling passed.

Even though carriers were getting into the building through broken doors and windows like water from a leaky pipe, they didn't bump into anything as they made their way back to the dog kennel. The manhole in the corner was still shut, the crowbar on the beaten utility shelf next to it. Ada picked up the heavy steel rod and tossed it to Leon.

“You pry, I'll help lift.”

She squatted down as he shoved the edge of the crowbar into the rim of the manhole, then worked her fingers underneath it as he pried it up, grunting as the heavy metal lid began to lift.

With their combined efforts the manhole cover was thrown back with a clatter. He jumped, half expecting one of those zombie dogs to ambush them given the racket they'd made, but the kennels were happily silent as they slipped unnoticed into the sewers.

"Jesus," Leon retched as he landed knee deep in a puddle of filth and waste, reaching up to help Ada down, like the gentleman he was. "It smells like shit in here."

And Leon's detective skills did not go unrewarded, as an obnoxiously large human turd floated past his leg. Still, that was really the last of his worries.

"You gonna be ok, Princess?" he asked with a laugh, "Cause I ain't carrying you, even if those shoes are Gucci."

A putrid smell burst forth from the opening which felt warm and clammy on her skin. Ada wrinkled her nose, loathing the fact that this way was actually the shortest route to the labs. At least she knew the way by heart; the less time she spent down there the better.

Leon reluctantly went first. Ada heard him splash into the muck below, then descended the short ladder after him, all the while keeping a close eye on where he was looking. Standing in sewage or not, he would still have a clear shot straight up her dress. But his head was in the right place, making sure their was nothing ready to attack them. By the time she was ready to dismount the ladder, the hem of her short red dress was past his eyes, and he was offering her his hand.

“So much for being a gentleman,” she teased as she took his hand, then grimaced and stepped into the viscous water. The water was cold, filled with unidentifiable particles that grazed her legs through her stockings. “And they're actually Pollini, Italian imported.”

Ada settled on the bottom of the murky channel, steady as ever in the light current. The dark line of water stopped just below her knees. Inside the enclosed sewer tunnel, the smell was overpowering. It dwarfed the liberal dose of Chanel's Allure she spiced herself with before leaving. That had helped with the smell of decomposition that was everywhere, but now all she could smell was waste, grime, and filth.

This is a small connecting tunnel that meets up with the sewer disposal unit down the block. From there, I can get into the main part of the sewers and to the cable car that runs to the factory. There's plenty of places where I can leave him and make a break for it.

The tunnel behind them was barred off, leaving the opposite direction the only way forward. Ada cocked her head towards it. “If you don't mind, how about we get out of this as fast as possible?”

"Right, yeah," Leon wrinkled his nose against the hideous smell and shot Ada an apologetic glance, "This isn't usually the kind of place I'd bring a girl if I wanted to impress her," he cracked with a laugh as they sloshed through the sewage.

Keep your spirits up, Leon. You'll be outta here soon...

"Man, I'm gonna seriously need a shower after this," he mused aloud. They trudged on in silence, until they reached a door marked "Sewage Disposal Unit".

Sounds like a fun place to be on a Friday night.

He pushed the heavy door open with a grunt, and motion to Ada to follow. As they entered, he found himself looking over at her and wondering how she managed to still look graceful, even while knee deep in the cumulative total of Racoon City's toilet flushings.

In fact, this bizarre thought was so distracting, that he failed to notice the hint of a shadow moving under the murky waters, until a tidal wave of filthy water sent him reeling backwards against the grimy wall, and he found himself staring into reptillian eyes, and a long, stark row of teeth.

"Ada! Get back!" he yelled, fumbling for his weapon, which he had foolishly holstered during their trek.

It was just after they began navigating through the main sewer tunnels connected to the sewage disposal unit that it attacked. Ada had more or less taken the lead, planning to cut through the () up ahead. From there, they could get to the door that led to the factory's cable car. Only she didn't expect to experience just how unpredictable the T-virus was.

She read from the sparse reports the organization gathered on its effects, and one of them was a possibility of enlarging certain organisms to several times beyond there usual size. That much she could accept, only she could fathom just how big something could get. What emerged from the water was just that: a crocodile (or alligator) that was ten times its normal size.

-Jesus-

Leon called for her to retreat, but she was already firing into the thing's snout. The close tunnel walls and cramped space amplified the report of each round until she thought her ears would bleed. The entire clip hit the reptile, though it was hard to tell from its scaly flesh and the murky water if the bullets actually did anything. In the brief glimpse she caught of it in the dark lighting of the sewer she could tell that there was just something wrong about it, not just its normal size.

The crocodile hissed in a throaty purr as it cracked its mouth open. The length of its snout was easily six feet long if not longer, and each tooth set in dirty rows was at least the size of Ada's hand.

As soon as her magazine clicked dry, Ada released it, then slammed the next one into her gun. The thing was so big that it took up most of the tunnel. It had already cut off the the route they had come from, and the way behind them led to the dumping area, which was potentially a dead end.
